Years of Dedicated Service

Most of the camps at Selkirk were planned and implemented by volunteers.

For most people involved, this meant months of planning their particular camp, giving up a week’s vacation to attend the camp, and time away from their family, if their family wasn’t involved in the particular camp.

Are you one of these people? Do you know one? A few have already been mentioned in previous posts and comments. Were you a Brownie leader, Guider or Scouter for many camps at Selkirk? Did you spend several years on Music Camp faculty? Did you help plan Men’s or Women’s camps? We want to hear from anyone who volunteered at any camp for a number of years. I think there are some who can claim 10 or more years.

Let us know how many years you have given to the camping ministry. And THANK YOU, from all former campers!

This post got me thinking about Les Dix. I mentioned him in an earlier post, but I really think he was responsible for my love for music camp. He made everything so much fun.

There were so many people at Junior Music camp that were like that too. Donna already mentioned Uncle Dale and Aunt Nancy, but there was also Uncle Grant and Aunt Paulette Haskell, the Kinghorns, the Preeces, the Rimans, I could go on and on.

Greg Riman and I are currently working together (with lots of other great people) on planning the ONGL music camp for this summer. It's a neat "next generation" kind of thing.

Are there any others out there who had 3rd generation campers at Selkirk? I know Dale and Nancy Haskell did, but there must be more.

As a DYS I had 14 committees made up of volunteers for the various camps! There are lots of volunteers...the Kinghorns, Davies, Gleadalls, Teakles, Edens, Berries, Williams, Vizes, etc...to mention just a few.

Boy! Is it hard to think of how long I was at camp. I believe it was 22 years, give or take a year. Bev and I started coming to camp when Derek was 5 years old. We were councillors for one year and then she was unable to come back. But ended up as cook for 9 years. I then became JMC Director for a few years and then took on the Bible Cordinators job for the rest of my stay at camp.It has been a blessing to me to be a part of Camp Selkirk. I have met a lot of people over the years and have also seen a lot of young people grow up and become faculty members also. But the most wonderful experience is seeing 120 young people give their lives back to Christ. Do you remember that year. What a finale to the week!

The Two people that come to my mind when it comes to volunteering for camp is Jane Dunn and Ron Pinson. Ever since I was a guide and then a guider and brownie leader those two people have been there. Thank you I will send you some pics Fred when I get them out.

My dad co-ordinated JMC for 9 years, I believe. I know he spent countless hours planning for the next year, and making sure camp was always running smoothly. Hopefully, I can get him to read the Selkirk blogs, I know he'd enjoy them.

My formula to a good, successful camp, as demonstrated by those who have paved the way, is simply this:

Willing volunteers with an open heart + a ton of young hearts ready to learn and have fun.

The faculty I grew up with didn't just teach me notes on a page or how to hold my instrument, but, they taught me how to love others and their interest in my spiritual life was number one one the agenda. Thanks to all of you who helped to teach me about how much fun it is to serve the Lord! I love you all! I just hope that my time on faculty will help someone else learn more about God!
