The Smell, Part 2

I've often heard smell is a big factor in bringing back memories. You've probably experienced this yourself.

The bad smell of the beach and the old sulphur water have already been mentioned here.

Other, more pleasant smells also bring back camp memories for me. Freshly cut grass often reminds me of camp. (Guess that also means the chore boys were good at keeping up with that part of their job!).

Noxzema skin cream was a popular item with the girls when I was on staff. To this day, it brings back memories of washing up at the double sinks in Hoover House!

Do you have a more pleasant smell that reminds you of camp?

Lysol disinfectant spray still reminds me of camp to this very day. As councellors, we used to have to scrub down the green plastic matresses and spray the pillows with Lysol disinfectant after each camp left. It brings back bittersweet memories for me. Oh, and KONK bug spray. Cabin 7 was spider central!

Noxzema! That is so true. We all practically bathed ourselves in that stuff.

For some reason the smell of bacon always takes me back to camp. Maybe because Mom didn't make it for us very ofen so camp was the only place we got to eat it.

yes, bacon and bug spray! for me the smell of "Lemon Up" shampoo is in my memory banks. The summer i counseled at Freshie my fellow counselor and i would walk to the lake to wash our hair and shave our legs! i feel bad now that we polluted the water with surfactants etc. but the lake water sure made our hair soft!!! Also, the smell of Sun In was a very 70s smell. The waitresses would use this and lie out in the sun, blondifying their hair. Coconut 'suntan oil' *back in the days before sunblock* that was a huge camp smell for me. The sulphur water, wow was that ever nasty. ugh.

Noxzema has to be one of the smells of summer at camp. The old washrooms when we all had to run there in our jammers before bed and get washed.Another smell is around the dining hall and every food cooked you could smell outside. And of course the days of sulpher in the water.

Obviously, you younger bloggers don't remember the smell of sulphur that met you when you had an encounter with the water. Drinking it was almost impossible. The chlorine bleach that was used to disinfect did nothing to make the smell any better. The plastic cups retained the smell of both and...... enough said.
