Rise and shine

Flag Raising - the early morning tradition. Of all the common threads of the various camps this is perhaps the one that binds all the camp programs together. Everyone gathered around the flag pole each morning for the raising of the flag, devotions and exercises. Yes the exercises! Those silly jumps, hops and stretches. Occassionally something went up the flag pole with the flag (though I couldn't find any pictures) and occassionally something fell out of the flag as it was unfurled.

Did you have a favourite leader 'round the flag pole? Any favourite memories?

I remember Derek Pitt and I hid under the flagpole during Jr. Music one year. There was a hole dug when the flagpole was replaced and it wasn't yet filled in. A few boards were placed over the hole to ensure nobody fell in. The campers came out of dinner and assumed the horseshoe formation as the staff band played a prelude. Some announcements were given and a prayer said. During the flag lowering, during God save the queen...

Derek and I jumped out with some super soakers and sprayed all the campers and counsellors. This, in turn led to an all out waterfight where campers were filling garbage cans full of water and grabbing their water arsenal.

[The current DYS had this as an idea so we didn't get in trouble... but Mr. Kinghorn was really mad that we disrespected the Queen like that].

I remember that!! Leave it to Norm Garcia to come up with that idea!

I think it was the same week where Rodney Hotchkiss actually got up on the roof of the dining hall with the pressure sprayer, and soaked the campers coming out after lunch....

I don't have a favourite flagpole leader, but I did not like being the flagpole leader!

As a 'holiday' camp councellor, I had to take a turn with my co-councellor for flagpole duty several times over the few weeks.

Trying to find a short, but meaningful devotional for kids with little or no 'church' background was difficult. And they were usually interested in the next activity and not listening anyway!

My favourite exercise for them was to run around the pool. Of course the councellors always exempted ourselves to head to the dining hall to make sure there was a councellor at each table for breakfast, if it was flag raising or preparing for the evening activity if it was flag lowering!
