I'm being a bit selfish this morning by posting a Camp Selkirk picture with a family connection. This is our eldest son Jason at the beginning of Junior Music Camp. I think he had been playing a very short time and he is waiting by Ernie Pitt to go "audition". That year the kids, maybe just the younger kids, but they had huge name tags. You can see his blowing in the wind.
At any rate - how young were you when you started at camp? What do you remember? What camp was it? Music, cub, guide, other?

My first camp would have been brownie camp.
I think I was 7 or 8, likely 1979 or 1980. I think it was about a 3 day camp.
I remember being homesick a bit. To make matters worse, I think a divisional picnic occurred during the camp, so I saw my parents and then they had to leave again. I don't think I was too homesick though. I don't remember it being devastating! I think it was more at night when things slowed down.
I don't remember much else. Don't remember my impression of the camp, although, I think I had been there younger, for picnics and a corps retreat.
I don't remember how old I was when I first went to camp...It could have been Selkirk, could have been Roblin Lake or Beaver Creek in Saskatchewan but I do know that my first music camp experience at Selkirk was in 1991. I brought with me Sonja Nicholson from Northern Ireland. I had been to her music camp and then she came with me to mine. Does anyone out there remember Sonja?
My first camp was also Brownie camp. It was definitely a shorter camp. I don't remember being homesick at all.
I do remember falling out of bed in the middle of the night and getting a nasty bump on my head. The leaders took me over to spend the night in the camp hospital, but I was OK.
Apparently my sister woke up in the morning and saw me missing and got scared. Someone told her I had been taken to the hospital and she thought it was the real hospital, not the camp hospital.
I'm pretty sure I was back in action for breakfast.
Remember that, Lynn?
I remember that you fell, but I don't remember my reaction!
I thought our cousin Shelley reacted worse then I did. I think she was there. Or was that a music camp?
I think I was 11 the first time I went to camp. I remember that I was not allowed to sleep on the top bunk because my Mom said that I sleepwalk on my application. I think I traded with someone to get the top bunk anyway:) Yes Gwyneth I do remember Sonja. Let there be praise cabin 13+1. I may have a couple of pictures of us doing that I will have to dig them out. I think that was my last year at SMC :(
before I was camp age, I went to camp with my folks (dad was on music camp faculty a few times). I think the first official time, though, was a brownie camp, followed closely by a Jr. Music camp! I remember Brownie camp was no biggie because my mother was one of the leaders, but at music camp I was a little bit homesick. That didn't last long, though, because before long I was counting down the days until the next camp! I still have a picture of our first music camp - I really must find it! Sue and Lynn and Judith, Sharon, etc., etc., etc.! We all looked so cute!!hehe!! Brownie camp I think I was 6, so 1978, and Music camp I would have been 7, so 1979. Man, that was a long time ago, but I have the most wonderful memories of Camp Selkirk and my awesome life-long friends I made!
by the way, that last anonymous was from me, Mona Cooper (now Ouwendyk)!!! sorry, I forgot to leave my name!!!hehe
Hey Gwyneth
I definitely remember that year because it was my first year at SMC too. I remember Sonja and how she would make tea in the cabin. I also recall you starting a brief romance with a red-headed Irish boy. LOL!!
