SMC (and JMC!) Faculty

I think someone was reading my mind! The prior post about volunteers at camp goes right along with what I've been wanting to say about the music camp faculties, especially those people who went up year after year. They really had a great influence on me!

One couple, who were what I call a "Camp Selkirk Institution", was Mr. and Mrs. "K". (although, I think Mr. K. went by the name of "Angus" in this get-up!) They were just one couple out of many who were wonderful Christian and musical influences on us all. (I also thought it was so cute how they would often dress in matching outfits!) It just wasn't camp without them!

Yes, those were the days. Many of us spent many a week at Selkirk, teaching the younger ones the many valuable lessons of music and of life. And many of us not only did music camp, but Guide camp and women's or men's camp as well.
Variety is the spice of life and we sure got it at camp.

That's one thing that I don't get about camps here in the States. At music camps, the special faculty comes in, but have their own lodging and barely associate with the campers. Sad, because I have great (and no-so-great) memories of my counsellors and teachers....Mr and Mrs K were definitely some of my favourites! I remember he had whistling ability and would wake us up! I also remember them teasing Sylvia Piedrahita and I about a boy on staff we thought was cute. Ha, fun times!

Where do you even begin, in listing the faculties through the years that played with us, grew with us, and prayed for us!!

In my era, it was people like:
Dale & Nancy Haskell
John & Ena Kissack
George & Janice Riman (my parents)
Graham Kinghorn (who taught me trombone. Thanks!)
Steve Berry
Ken & Melody Bailey
Starr Ferris
Glen Reynolds (my gr. 2 theory teacher for 3 yrs)
Steve Brown
Steve & Kathy Preece
Les & Dora Dix
Marv Kitney
John & Sharon Avery
....and the list could go on forever.

This year, our 9th, will probably be my wife and I's last for camp, due to all the changes happening. I just hope and pray that we have been effective in giving back to camps, what the camps gave to us. Although we've been at Glenhuron for the 9 years, Selkirk will ALWAYS, ALWAYS be my true home. What great stories, memories, and friendships I'll have to share with my kids.

And as I've said in earlier blogs, Sue (Titcombe) and I have done our best to always keep the Selkirk tradition going at Glenhuron with "Elsie the cow."
