Award Winners

I don't believe that an official list exists anywhere, but I would be interested in hearing from award winners.
Do we have any reading this?
Let's hear from you - what did you get and when?
Oh - and name the people in the photo. I'll give you this much: that's me with the late Lt. Colonel Bob Slous. The kids are...

I'm going to guess Adam Pearson in the back and Michelle and Derek Pitt in the front?

The one in front, on the right, is Alex Williams. I think he still goes to Mountain Citadel...

I guess I should admit that I'm a music camp award winner. I was runner-up honour student at junior 1985, and honour student at junior 1986. I was also the vocal honour student at senior in 1988, which was the first year they had separate vocal and instrumental honour students. Andrew Burditt was the instrumental honour student that year. I remember my brother winning a solo competition or two, but I can't remember any details.

That looks like my brother Jon Vize in the back right. Alex is at Meadowlands now.

The people I can see clearly are Derrick and Alex....but I see people already identified them.

I think I won runner-up Bible at Junior music camp. Impressive, no? I have no idea what year...maybe 86 or 87??
Oooh, and also runner up grade 4 theory. It doesn't get any better than that! :)

By the way - this site is awesome!

Oh wait, is that Chris Pitt, not Derrick? That would make more sense, since Derrick is older than me, and I am like 5+ years older than Jon and Alex...

Another edit (yeah, yeah)...
I guess I can't remember what years I went to camp...maybe it was like 89 or 90 I won something...
not so monumental!

I won the grade 5 instrumental and the grade 4 theory (there was no runner-up)...can't remember what year it was, but the guests were from the states.

This has nothing to do with the pic...Mandi! Good to see your name!!! How are you?? What's new with you? Do you remember our stargazing nights out on the look out tower. You, me and Steve Bisset. I think that was the summer of '94.

I was the queen of the second place award. I got second place in Bible one year and second place in level 4 theory.

I don't even know if the certificates to prove that still exist anywhere in my mother's house.

I'm not really sure how I feel about awards competitions at camp. I did always feel like a loser on the way home from camp because I never won anything. It was always a bad way to end an otherwise amazing week. Yet now, when I look back on it, I don't really think about that at all, I think about what I learned and my friends. So over the long haul, I don't think I'm scarred for life or anything like that.

I do like how the number of awards has decreased in recent years, especially at junior camp. I like taking the pressure off the younger kids.

I agree with you, Sue. The change in the JMC awards to a scholarship based on overall "spirit" is much better for the young kids.

At the senior level, though, I think you need the awards to give the kids some motivation. I've been on faculty at Jackson's Point a few times, and there are no awards at senior music camp. The result is that most of the kids could care less about learning anything, and just goof off the whole week. Kinda defeats the purpose of having a "music camp" - they might as well just change it to "Teen Camp" or something...

I won the the B level vocal solo at Sr. in 1989.

Hi J9,

I definitely agree with what you're saying too. There is definitely a motivating factor behind the awards that can motivate the older kids to work harder.

Like so many things in life, it's all about finding balance!

Gwyneth, it was summer 1994 when you, Steve, and Mandi were on staff. I have pics from SMC that summer with you guys in them. Hope to get some up here at some point!

If anyone has an account on facebook.com look me up as you'll find all my SMC 1994 pics there in my photo album!

Hi Gwyneth! I totally remember stargazing with you and Steve. That was so much fun! I just got out my photo album from that summer the other day and had a walk down memory lane. Do you remember when we destroyed Cedar lodge? I think we had a party or something. ...Yes, good times were had!

Yes, I won many a girls' heart at JMC...(Oops...sorry...just dreaming out loud there for a minute..) Actually, I did get second in my level of instrumental, two years in a row. However, I forget what years.

Carlson Teakle (Niagara Falls) and I tied for fourth runner-up honour student my last year at JMC. I Believe Trevor Dix was the winner, or at least second.

I remember Cedar Lodge being completely rearranged but as I recall it was done by boys staff. I think we had played some pranks on them, and they were exacting revenge. I personally remember stapling all the legs and arms shut on Tim Campbell's clothing, and I remember (maybe it was your shoulders????) being caught at officers camp on someone's shoulders with half my body in boys staff window trying to get in to prank them. Was that you????

I don't remember you standing on my shoulders, but I do remember you standing on someone's shoulders. Maybe it was Carla? You're right, it was the boys staff who rearranged cedar lodge. Was that because we dismembered the capon? Or did we do that afterwards?

I think I won Level 1 vocal at Senior music camp in 1985. I also had a feeling that I was the only person in level 1!! As I mentioned in the "Auditions" post, I could not sing alone and always had horrible auditions!

My first year at JMC I won the Timbrel Beginners Award! I'll never forget that one! Later on I always tried the vocal competition, but not until my last year at SMC did I get anything! I remember being so disappointed every year, but that last year felt good to go out with a bit of a bang! I got 2nd in the vocal competition and vocal honour student in 1989. I did ok in theory a few times, too, but those noted above were the highlights.

I remember getting 2nd place Bible award one year. I was shocked as I am sure everyone else was since I was only at camp for social reasons. I never tried to win anything. I guess that sound bad but, I ALWAYS had a GREAT time at camp.
